The Toyota RC60 series (specifically the RC60 and RC61) is the 6-speed manual transmission designed to pair with the 1GD-FTV (2.8L) and 2GD-FTV (2.4L) Global Diesel engines. Commonly found in the Hilux and Fortuner, this gearbox was engineered to replace the older 5-speed units, providing better torque handling and improved fuel efficiency.
Type: 6-Speed Triple-Cone Synchromesh Manual.
Torque Capacity: Designed to manage the high low-end torque of the GD series, typically handling up to 420Nm in manual configurations.
Gear Ratios: Features a very low 1st gear (approx. 4.78:1) for heavy departures and towing, with a tall 6th gear (approx. 0.64:1) acting as a double-overdrive for quiet, economical highway cruising.
iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission): Many models equipped with this gearbox feature a rev-matching function that automatically adjusts engine speed during upshifts and downshifts for smoother transitions.
Weight Reduction: The casing uses high-pressure die-cast aluminum to shed weight while maintaining structural rigidity for 4×2 workhorse applications.
The RC60/61 is known for its “truck-like” durability but with more refined shift throws than its predecessors. In the 4×2 configuration, the gearbox is direct-drive to the rear wheels, making it simpler and lighter than the 4×4 transfer case versions.
| Gear | Ratio (Approx.) | Purpose |
| 1st | 4.784 | High-torque take-off / Heavy loads |
| 5th | 0.777 | Overdrive (Urban cruising) |
| 6th | 0.643 | Deep Overdrive (High-speed economy) |
