• Material: cast aluminium alloy (typical OE piston alloy) with machined ring grooves and pin bore.
• Crown: generally flat or slightly dished with shallow valve reliefs (cutouts) to provide valve clearance. The crown may show stamped ID numbers (piston number/position).
• Ring lands/grooves: three machined grooves — two upper compression ring grooves and one lower oil-ring groove (configured to accept an oil-ring expander and two thin rails). Grooves are machined and chamfered for correct ring seating.
• Skirt: asymmetrical skirt profile (reduced friction design) with possible low-friction coating or surface treatment (graphite or phosphate) in the skirt area to minimize scuffing and noise.
• Wrist pin (gudgeon pin): floating (full-floating) or semi-floating design depending on application, sized for a circlip-retained fit in the piston pin bore. Pin bore is precision machined.
• Internal features: oil control holes or pockets behind the oil ring land are sometimes present to aid lubrication/circulation and reduce oil consumption. Pistons are usually weight-matched and stamped for orientation/position.
