Construction & materials
• Top ring (1.5 mm): compression ring, usually cast iron or steel, commonly with a low‑friction coating (moly, nitrided or chrome) or phosphate finish. Marked or dimpled to show orientation.
• Second ring (1.5 mm): scraper/secondary compression ring, cast or steel; may be tapered or stepped face to aid oil control.
• Oil ring (2.5 mm): three‑piece design — spring/expander in the center with two thin steel rails (upper and lower). Rails and expander are spring steel or plated steel to resist wear and maintain tension.
